Backpacking Backpacking sweeps the backpacker into the wild world of wilderness with all its grandeur and intensity. Backpackers can hike for almost as many days and almost as far as they want: for example, from Staircase in the southeast corner of the park to the Grand Valley in the northeast, from the Dosewallips in the east to Quinault in the west, or from Elwah in the north to Sol Duc in the west. | Leave No Trace (LNT) Trainings Leave No Trace is the national standard for outdoor recreation ethics from a conservation perspective. The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics has established two main basic trainings in LNT: Awareness Workshops and Trainer Courses. Awareness Workshops last only a couple hours and offer little or no outdoor training. Trainer Courses are an intensive overnight experience with some backpacking. Scouting Guide and owner Jason Bausher is an Eagle Scout, Vigil Honor recipient, and is Wood Badge-trained. Mountain Seminars Do the mountains, rivers, and glaciers of Olympic National Park merely form one big playground, or is wilderness essential to our Being as embodied Beings in the world? Jason Bausher works on questions such as this in his environmental philosophy, and he shares his research in mountain seminars. Of Wildness, Domestication, and Learning Wildness in Wilderness

Wildness is the authenticity of becoming what someone is--a way of Being conditioned by the people and places in which one finds oneself and yet free to choose the good, the right, and the just to thereby win one's self for oneself.
Jason Bausher's published and unpublished professional academic work focuses on a theological philosophy of wildness. Some of this work will be made available on the Olympic Mountain School web site in June, 2006, and to Olympic Mountain School students who desire to know more about wildness. Wildness Week 2007, Wildness Studies, and professional conversations in the scholarly community are additional fora for articulating a grounded, enfleshed, practical body of work aiding in the task of turning away from inauthenticity and toward the authentic ways of Being for human beings as individuals and in collectives.
Olympic Mountain School is organizing Wildness Week 2007 to attract scholars interesting in discussines wildness in the wilderness of Olympic National Park. Multiple essay prizes include the Paul Shepard Prize and the Edward Abbey Prize.
Olympic Mountain School also launched Wildness Studies on July 16, 2006 in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the passing away of Paul Shepard.
